Do I have to report income from foreign brands or work I did abroad?

Short answer

Yes. U.S. citizens and residents generally report income from anywhere in the world, so a brand deal from a foreign company or income earned while working abroad goes on your U.S. return, though credits or exclusions may lower the tax you owe.

Foreign brands paying you

A brand deal from a company in another country is reported the same way as a U.S. one, even though you usually won't get a 1099. If the other country withheld tax, you may be able to claim a credit for it.

Living or working abroad

If you spend a large part of the year outside the U.S., you may qualify to exclude some of your earnings, but only if you meet specific tests. Self-employment tax often still applies.

Foreign accounts

If you hold money in foreign bank or payment accounts above certain balances, there are extra reporting forms.

Things to track: the date and amount of each foreign payment in U.S. dollars, any tax withheld, and the days you spent in each country.

We work with creators who file taxes in the U.S. If you also file in another country, tell us on your consultation.
