How much should a creator set aside for taxes from each brand deal?
Short answer
Most creators we talk to set aside 25% to 30% of every payment, but the right percentage depends on your profit, your state and your write-offs, and once your books are clean it's often lower.

A flat percentage is a good start and a bad long-term plan. Your real tax rate depends on:
- Self-employment tax on your profit, on top of federal income tax
- Your state. Some states, like Texas and Florida, have no state income tax
- How many write-offs you take
- Whether you're an S-Corp or using a retirement account
We've talked to creators in Texas saving 30% of everything, which likely meant more cash sitting idle than they needed. That's money that could have gone into an editor or new equipment.
A simple system that works:
- Open a separate high-yield savings account just for taxes.
- Every time a brand deal, AdSense or TikTok payout lands, move your percentage there.
- Pay your quarterly estimates from that account.
- Once your books are current, adjust the percentage to your real profit.
Every DeCypher plan includes your quarterly estimates, calculated from what you've actually made and spent, so your set-aside matches reality instead of a guess.
These are not guarantees. Every creator's situation is different.
