Should I have more than one LLC?

Short answer

Usually not at first. One LLC with clean books is enough for most creators, and extra LLCs only make sense when a business has its own real risk, different owners or a separate future, because each one adds fees, filings and bookkeeping.

When a second LLC can make sense:

  • Physical products with real liability, like supplements, food or anything shipped to customers
  • Rental property or other real estate
  • A business with different owners, like a partnership with a friend
  • A brand you may sell someday, which is easier to sell on its own
  • An agency or team with employees and contracts of its own

When it usually doesn't:

  • A new channel or a second niche
  • Merch or a course tied to your main brand
  • "It might protect me more" with no specific risk in mind

For separate brands under one business, a DBA (a registered business name) is often enough.

What every extra LLC costs: state fees and reports, a separate bank account and books, sometimes its own tax return, and in some states a yearly minimum tax. We've seen creators with four LLCs paying for all of that, sharing one bank account between them, which also undercuts the protection the LLCs were meant to give.
