Can I write off a trip if I film content on it?

Short answer

You can generally write off a trip when business is its main purpose, like filming content you'll publish, a brand shoot or a creator conference, but filming one quick clip on a vacation doesn't make the whole trip deductible.

What usually counts:

  • Trips to film planned content for your channel
  • Brand deals, shoots and meetings
  • Creator conferences and events
  • Meeting other creators to plan collaborations

What you can usually deduct on a business trip: flights, lodging, rideshares and rental cars, and 50% of meals.

Mixed trips need care. If you spend five days filming and three days on vacation, the business share is what counts. Costs for family members usually aren't deductible unless they work in your business.

How to make a trip hold up:

  1. Plan the content before you go. A content calendar or shot list shows intent.
  2. Attach a brand deal when you can. A contract is the strongest proof of purpose.
  3. Publish the content.
  4. Pay with your business card, and use points for personal travel.

Keep it reasonable for your income. A business-class flight on a trip that earned a few hundred dollars draws more attention than the same flight on a five-figure brand deal.
